This course focuses on the use of social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours and their impact on society. Students will critically analyse how and why cultural, social, and behavioural patterns change over tie. They will explore the ideas of social theorists and use those ideas to analyse causes of and responses to challenges such as technological change, deviance, and global inequalities. Students will explore ways in which social science research methods can be used to study social change.

Essential Learning and Evaluation Breakdown
The due dates for essays are the cut-off dates. If it’s unlikely you’ll be able to finish the work by the assigned date, then please see me to negotiate a possible extension before the due date. Plan accordingly.
Units of Study:
The essential learning criteria will be covered throughout the semester as we explore the following units of study: See the Ontario Curriculum (pp. 318-326):
1. Why we are who we are: Social Science Theories and Methodology – Our lens of exploration: what are the theories? Students will create their own experiment following social science methodology, and will compare and apply major social science theories.
2. Why we hate and harm: Demographics, Deviance and Discrimination – Why we hate others: from deviance and bullying to trends in invasions and war and how hatred interacts with mobility, poverty, and technology. Are media teaching or brainwashing societies to behave in the best interest of corporations or of citizens?
3. Global social challenges: Economics, Environment, Exploitation, and Employment: Does Size Matter? - What’s our involvement in exploitation created through the current globalization process?
